TRANEKÆR CASTLE

The red castle, which sits on the hill in Tranekær, is known from sources as far back as the 13th century and the time of Valdemar the Great. Back then it was a heavily fortified castle on a steep hill with a moat and drawbridge. Over the following centuries, two of the wings were demolished, while the romantic 19th century added gabled gables and a tower to the remaining two. In 1860 Count Ahlefeldt-Laurvig got architect NS Nebelong involved in the project to restore the castle.

In 1948-1949, the main buildings were again restored and the facades painted English red, as they stand today.
