Panos Charalambous: Nafpaktos

(the boat existed for a few years and disappeared during a storm)

Nafpaktos means Boat Builder in Greek, and the boat refers to one of the artist Panos Charalambous' two main themes in his artistic work.

One is tobacco, tobacco cultivation and the substance of the dried tobacco leaves. The second is fishing: fresh fish, frozen fish, casts of fish, fishing hooks, fishing nets and so on.

He never lets go of these subjects, so his works are always close to reality and are based on tradition and his own background from growing up in the Greek city, Akarnania.

The work Nafpaktos – a red-painted boat – was a reconstruction of a dinghy he found at the bottom of the lake. History does not say whether he searched entire lake areas or came across it by chance.

The boat, was moored in the lake and with its red brick-built sides as a complementary color to the lake-green water, the park's audience could themselves continue the story of the excursion, which either began or ended here.

During a storm the boat broke loose and sank/disappeared.
